Intelligent Oil Reservoir Characterization and Modeling PDF Print E-mail

Intelligent Data Analysis can enhance your ability in discovering new reserves and assist in improved reservoir management and production optimization. These (advanced non-linear) analysis techniques have also been proven useful in production. Especially in case of reservoirs that contain major portions of future oil and gas resources for which exploration, development and production problems become more difficult.

By using innovative Data Mining techniques for 3D-seismic data exploration, 3D-seismic images of the sub-surface are generated. Our services that cover the entire range, from 3D-data processing, data analysis, and imaging, to detailed visualization, interpretation and earth modeling.

Although 3D-seismic exploration is expensive because of acquisition costs and computer processing (500 gigabytes/survey), they are mostly used today because it saves money by decreasing the number of exploration dry holes. It images and defines accurately the sub-surface reservoir and, therefore, it saves money during the developmental drilling.  The 3D seismic survey together with geological data, well log, and production data lead to:

  • Lowering of the exploration risk and production costs
  • Improving recovery through more efficient production
  • Extending the life of producing wells
  • Data fusion and interpretation of the new results can lead to new ideas in oil exploration
For other usage scenarios in oil exploration, see here.

Time-lapse seismic monitoring

Using time as a fourth dimension, it is possible to increase the production capability of a well even more: 4D-Seismic exploration or time-lapse seismic exploration uses several 3D-seismic surveys over the same producing reservoir at various time intervals (six months to 2 years) to trace the flow of fluids through the reservoir. When the reservoir is drained, the temperature, pressure, and composition of the fluids vary. Gas bubbles from the soil and water replaces gas and oil as it is being produced. Time slices of the reservoir are compared, and changes in the seismic response such as the amplitude can document the drainage. Undrained pockets of oil can be located and wells drilled to drain them.

Other oil exploration issues

Besides the above mentioned areas, we can also help you with:

  • Seismic Chimney detection
  • Sedimentology and stratigraphic models: for example, Fuzzy logic can be used to build up such models.
  • GeoBody detection from seismic data: for example using minimum message length clustering; more general: automated delineation of geological elements from 3D seismic data.
  • Combining geological information with seismic and production data
